Do customer loyalty schemes really benefit their members?

Nowadays it seems that every major retailer, airline and hotel chain is offering customers the chance to sign up to a loyalty scheme. By rewarding regular customers for their business with every conceivable bonus from discounts on purchases to free flights and hotel accommodation, is there a radical difference between loyalty schemes?

Competition for customers' loyalty is fierce, so many big-name brands spend a huge proportion of their budgets on devising, implementing and maintaining these schemes in the hope of gaining an edge over their competitors. However, some experts believe that many loyalty schemes actually fail to radically change customer behaviour or deliver a bottom line contribution to profit. In fact, research has shown that the amount of profit per customer is actually reduced because most loyalty schemes discounts customers' existing behaviour, rather than rewarding increased positive behaviour such as spending more money or returning more frequently.

The loyalty schemes of most high street retailers normally offer discounts against goods by collecting points each time a customer shops. These points are usually determined by the customer's spend, with a set number of points being rewarded for every pound spent. However, more often than not, these points can take a long time to accumulate and can often only be redeemed for discounts against certain products. Furthermore in many cases, discounts are time-locked so if points aren't redeemed within a given time, the customer can frequently lose out.

Airline loyalty schemes normally operate in a similar way, rewarding flyers with 'airmiles' which can be redeemed for free or discounted flights depending on the distance travelled. Some schemes also offer discounted food and drink in airport departure lounges as well as discounted seat upgrades, extra baggage allowance and complimentary in-flight drinks. Some airline loyalty schemes now offer members the ability to collect airmiles outwith flying, enabling members to collect while doing the weekly shop, filling the car with fuel or buying products online through affiliated retailers.

Most major hotel chains operate a loyalty programme for frequent visitors. Points collected through these schemes can often be used for stays at all the hotels in a chain around the world. The Radisson Goldpoints scheme offers members the chance to collect points through hotel stays and purchases made online and offers generous discounts to members.

The Hhonors loyalty program, operated by Hilton Hotels, offers a similar scheme, but members can also collect and redeem points through a network of over 2,800 hotels worldwide as well as 55 airline partners. The scheme also offers a credit card that can be used in conjunction with the loyalty scheme, earning members even more points whenever they use the card, as well as discounted hotel stays, priority room reservations and even a free newspaper delivered to your room each day during your stay.

While most loyalty schemes are free to join, it can be worthwhile checking out what each scheme offers in return for the member. While a ten per cent discount on your weekly shop may sound good at the beginning, is it a really desirable reward if you don't spend enough on a regular basis to take advantage?

For many, the average men's shirt is simply a garment of utility - one that is worn by men across the world for reasons of function and not necessarily fashion. But this attitude belies the hundreds of years of trends in men's shirts. From the typical collarless shirts with billowing sleeves worn by classical painters to the modern formal button-down shirt, men's shirts have captured the imaginations of both designers and ordinary men for generations. In the twentieth century in particular, a range of different shirt styles have proved popular with men of all ages.

One of the most important developments in men's shirts over the last hundred years, for example, has been the invention of the polo shirt. The polo shirt, or 'tennis shirt', was created by legendary French tennis player Rene Lacoste in 1929 as an alternative to the stiff dress shirts and ties typical of tennis attire at the time. In the 1960s, Ralph Lauren propelled the polo shirt to new heights as a prominent item in his 'Polo' collection; and since this time the polo shirt has become so popular that it is now a standard category of clothing - although it has fallen out of favour with most tennis players.

The granddad shirt has also been a long lasting trend in men's shirts in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These collarless shirts have been popular with men in warm countries for decades and have seen a variety of incarnations throughout the years. The Nehru Jacket, for instance, is a South Asian version of the modern granddad shirt that was popularised by the first Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1950s and early 1960s, and has since been prominently worn by a number of celebrities, from the likes of Sammy Davis Jr to Steven Segal. Today's granddad shirt preys on bright colours and an ethno-bohemian vibe that appeals to a variety of men's fashion trends - from festival clothing to smart casual summer wear.

The button-down shirt has also been one of the most influential men's shirts in fashion history - but memories of how it was created tend to be somewhat hazy. Some fashion experts claim that the button-down collar shirt was invented by an American shirt manufacturer who was inspired by an English polo match, in which players had their collars clipped down to avoid flapping in the wind. Others say that button-down shirts were created in New York, when their inventor (as yet anonymous) attached his collar to his shirt with buttons in a fit of annoyance at the oncoming wind.

But whatever the origin of the button-down shirt, its impact on the men's shirt industry has been historic, as button down shirts are now worn in both formal and casual contexts. Today, short-sleeved men's shirts are often worn with skinny jeans, large belts and tailored waistcoats for a fresh and informal look that still exudes smart chic. And with men's shirts available in a variety of colours - from grey to raspberry - and in a variety of floral and striped patterns, it's clear that evolving trends in men's fashion are far from over.

I had botched surgery after botched surgery. I was in jobs that back in my Mom's day would be high paying, but in my day, at $12 an hour, was barely enough to pay basic living needs and I barely made rent. Of course, the list went on, as it does with most of us.

Because I felt the need to buy presents for birthdays and Christmas even though I didn't have the money and couldn't afford such luxuries, I quickly learned how to be thrifty, save money and get the most bang for my buck.

Back in the day, I was often asked how I accomplished buying the things I did when I was barely able to afford to eat. I was always happy to share my tips and strategies. I have been there, done that and figured a way out of my financial crises on more than one occasion.

I understand that many people go through the same things with their money. We all suffer from unforeseen circumstances. As a young woman, I had to file bankruptcy after a failed required surgery. The procedure went bad, my insurance ran out, and by that time, no insurance would cover it. I had to pay for all the subsequent surgeries by myself.

I remained in debt, paying large monthly credit card bills from a relentless stream of "fix it" surgeries and when there was still no end in sight I gave up with $179 thousand more to pay (the rest I had already paid for). I just couldn't do it anymore and I cried all the way to the bankruptcy table.

With the desperation of today's economy, many people are struggling just to meet basic needs. Unfortunately, for the first time in American history, we are living off accumulated debt. Most people aren't worth even close to what they owe.

As an added pressure to our economic insecurity, we are importing our goods from other countries and even though most won't admit it and it's not showing the worst signs yet, I believe we are losing the economic battle to stay afloat in this country.

With wages not commiserative with the cost of living and jobs being taken away right and left after they are shipped overseas, the crunch is on to just survive. The 'American Dream' is fading fast with families working two or three jobs a day to get ahead and barely survive.

The widening gap between upper and middle classes makes those in poverty-stricken areas even more desperate to survive. We are all in trouble.

While back in the day it may have been possible to have the 'American Dream' if you worked hard, it doesn't seem possible anymore. So how can we support our families and get back to the 'American Dream?' By saving money and learning to be frugal consumers.

You can get out of the darkness and you can begin to see the light at the end of the financial doomsday tunnel. It's all about taking the time to use what little you don't have and make it work. It's time to make your money work for you instead of only working for your money!

Example. I have fed seven adults on less than $10. How? I used an entertainment book I had purchased through an elementary school and hit up all of the free or buy one-get one free items. We had leftovers and it was a lot of main courses as well as several side dishes!

With that same entertainment book, that originally cost $10, I have received free oil changes, dry cleaning, roses, eye exams, chiropractic, food, car wash and a lot more. One year I counted my savings and by using the book diligently, I had saved over $2,839.89! I have filled an entire truck with top-name brand gifts and goods, thousands and thousands of dollars worth for under $400.

How? By buying everything when it was 75% - 95% off and then applying for the card each store offered and using it. That added another 15 - 25% off at the various stores. In many cases, all I had to pay was sales tax! I had incredible gifts for two years for every event including Christmas! The trick to that one is to pay off the credit card as soon as the bill comes so there are no interest penalties then cancel it.

Because the bill was less than $400 total and I had been saving $27.00 two times a month all year, I had the money, plus the interest I earned off the money in my savings account and an additional $300 leftover once the bills were paid!

There is hope.

Here are a few more ideas to help you get on your way and begin living life and saving money.

1. How can you eat, drink and shop for free at restaurants and stores in your neighborhood? Sign up as a mystery shopper. I still keep my hand in the field, even though I tour all over the world. Its fun and I get paid! Tip: Never pay any company money to do their work. They are supposed to pay you! 2. Never put off tomorrow what you can pay today. While you don't want to pay bills too early, did you know that companies rely on people forgetting just past the date a bill is due and then you pay a high penalty? They can make thousands of dollars a year just from that little mistake on one person. That's money you can put in the bank! 3. Ping your vegetables and smell them to make sure you are getting what you paid for and do look in the vegetable and fruit portion of the market as they do have coupons available from time to time, that will discount your price!

Very Unusual College Scholarships for Those Who Haven't Had Huge Academic or Sports Success

College is very expensive, even if you are attending a junior college for the first two years. There are so many weird and whacky scholarships available and not just to those who are academically or athletically inclined. Do a Google search to find more information on them. *Introduction*

Hotbargains UK is a relatively new website which rewards its users for performing simple tasks online. Whereas sites like this one (Ciao) rewards its users for writing product reviews or for answering surveys, Hotbargains UK rewards for different various things - signing up to websites, clicking links, purchasing goods and much more. There are plenty of already established websites in the mould of HBUK, all in competition with each other, with some of the most famous being Rpoints and Ipoints. All of these websites perform in exactly the same way, offering financial gain in return for online-activities.

*How it works*

Normally when I talk to my friends about the HBUK website, I am greeted with confusion and bewilderment - how can a website offer money for performing such mundane tasks, like clicking a link? The response is quite simple - the website gets a higher reward for the tasks we do, and so they can offer part of the reward to us. For example, say HBUK offers 8p for performing a search at a search engine. The search engine is probably giving HBUK about 14p for every search, and so HBUK will be earning 6p for every search. This way it keeps everyone happy - the users are earning and HBUK is earning.

*To sign up*

To join the HBUK website you simply need to go to the website and click on the register link. You will be greeted with a simple form to fill in, with the only details required being your name, username (choose one), e-mail and password. Then HBUK will send you a confirmation e-mail which includes a link to activate your account. The website is obviously free to join, and there are no requirements to meet to be able to become a member. You will now be well on the way to earning your first HBUK money.

*Earning*

As mentioned earlier, you can earn money for clicking links (searching at search engines, for using product-price comparison websites etc) for joining free websites, and for purchasing goods online. There is a section on the site called 'recurring points.' Basically this section displays the activities which can be done on a daily basis to earn you points. Every day you can perform these 'clicks' as they are often referred to as, and they only take a few minutes to undertake too. Though the points available often changes due to companies withdrawing and new companies joining, I will try and list the recurring points available to date.

Search Anything Credit Cards - Earn 15p limited to one search per day Kelkoo - Earn 8p limited to one search per day High Street Web - Max of 4 actions a day, 2p per price comparison and 5p per search Priceguide UK - Earn 6p per visit, limited to one per day Dealtime - Earn 6p per link clicked to merchant site, max of 5 leads per day CarSource - Earn 2p per search, max of 3 per day

So basically you can earn 85 pence in about a minute or two. I know this doesn't sound like much, but if you do it every day for a month you've earned £26.85 from something which only takes a few seconds. Plus they are often adding new recurring links. Ebay have only recently been removed from the recurring points scheme, where previously they were offering 8p per bid on ebay, and about 40p per Buy It Now transaction. It's a shame that they've gone from the program now, though hopefully they'll come back.

There are other simple ways to earn money on the HBUK website. If you are going to purchase something online, such as some clothing or something, then why not do it from the HBUK website? They have a partnership program with many websites which means that they are able to offer cash back on purchases made. The amount is only about %5 or so, but still this is better than nothing - you're still saving money on your purchase. There are many shops listed on HBUK and you can easily suggest a shop to add if you have a regular favourite.

The final way to earn on the HBUK website is from registering at the listed websites, or by performing their listed activity. For example there are many gambling websites listed on the HBUK website, and you can easily take advantage by joining them via this website. Coral UK are listed on HBUK and you can earn £3.50 for joining them, and they usually have a promotion on too - like deposit £10 and get a free £10 bet.

There are other websites listed which you can join for free, and still earn money from it. All you have to do is fill in a simple sign up form, and your done. For example if you join Loppy Lotto from the HBUK website you will earn 30p.

*Checking your earnings*

Every week that you actively earn points on HBUK you will be e-mailed your statement showing all activity from the HBUK website. This will be in a MS Word format, and will be detailed with a brief description of each of the earnings (usually just the website used to earn, such as Kelkoo) and the amount earned from that activity, followed by the date the activity took place, and then finally the reward date. It usually takes about 3 weeks from the date the activity took place till the points are actually awarded, which can be frustrating but this is the same with all 'cashback' websites. You will notice that throughout the website and on the statement, the earnings are listed as points. These points are just transferred to pence - 1point being 1 pence.

*Claiming your earnings*

You can only claim your money when you have reached the minimum amount of £30. The points have to be in the 'earned' stage, and not the 'pending' stage (usually takes about 3 weeks). These earnings will be paid to you by paypal or by cheque, and this will be sent to the address which you used when registering.

To request a payment, you have to log in to the HBUK website, and then click the 'My Account' link in the top left of the screen. Then click on 'Support' and then type 'Withdrawal' in the title and write the amount you wish to claim in the body. Then submit the ticket, and your request will be processed within about 3 days. Requests are normally processed really quickly, and I've received my cheque in the post within a few days when I've requested mine, its all gone through really well.

*The Forum*

The forum is a place where HBUK users can post queries with the website, or find out the latest news or just talk with other HBUK users. Though there is hardly any activity on the forum (has just been announced on the forum that there are now 800 members) it is still a very important function of the website. There are plenty of helpful members and staff who will respond nearly instantly to any problems posted related to the HBUK website. Competitions and things are often running too on the forum, and at the moment the fantasy football league is quite a popular option with prize money standing at £20, plus it's a lot of fun too. Another useful part of the forum is the freebie section - where people post various freebies available online. Usually they include free samples of aftershaves, etc.

It's a shame that hardly any of the 800 members of HBUK actually use the forum, but I think It could partly be due to the popularity of other websites such as Rpoints - they have such a massive forum which people constantly post in, so they probably don't feel the need to use HBUK (most people use various cashback websites, not just one). This situation is probably hindered by the HBUK forum too - its often quite cluttered and awkward to navigate around, with a few annoying bugs still present, and a lack of clarity involved - especially compared to the Rpoints website.

*Support*

This is made readily available thanks to the forum, and the ticket system in place on the website. If you feel you have a problem with the HBUK website which you want to discuss, such as you can't find the link to the recurring points section, you can easily post a message in the support section of the forum. This is usually followed by a quick response by moderators or other HBUK users, who are always quick to help others out. The other way to gain support is by submitting a ticket. This is done by logging into your account, and then by clicking on 'My account' in the top left corner of the screen. Then click on 'Support' and then 'Submit a Ticket.' Then you simply give it a title and write the bulk of your problem in the main section of the page. By submitting your ticket, you are basically sending a message to the staff at HBUK, and you will be put in a type of waiting list. They will respond to your ticket usually within about a day, and are generally very helpful. Tickets are mainly used for problems such as points not appearing on your statement when they should have.

*Referrals*

Probably the best feature of the HBUK website is its referral scheme, which was recently been modified. Previously you could choose two options when referring a new member - either to earn £5 when the new member earns £30 in awarded cashback, or the more popular option which was to earn %25 of a new members lifetime earnings at HBUK. The first option has now been dropped, so by referring a new member you stand to receive %25 of anything that they earn at the HBUK website. This is an excellent scheme, so much better than the Rpoints one which offers £5 when the new member earns £30. On this scheme you are guaranteed money, as long as the new member uses HBUK.

*Overall*

Hotbargains UK is an excellent alternative to the other more prominent cashback sites currently available. Though it is reasonably new, and still has a relatively small user-base compared to the rest, it still manages quite adeptly to compete with the likes of Rpoints and Ipoints. Some of the offers available on the competitors' websites are a little more lucrative than some of the ones on HBUK, but this isn't by a great margin. In other areas, HBUK is a better site - particularly in its refer-a-friend scheme. HBUK's scheme offers far more than the Rpoints and Ipoints scheme, and so this is a clever move by HBUK to compete with its already-established competitors. Then again though, the forum on HBUK's website is nothing in comparison to the one on Rpoints, so there are a few varying points which sway for and against HBUK.

I feel HBUK could easily be improved though, and I feel this is quite essential if it were to ever be able to compete with the likes of Rpoints. The colours and general feel to the website is a bit dull, and it doesn't look too professional. I think simple touches need to be changed - like the header on the top of the page, which again looks a bit untidy and doesn't look to be of good quality either. The menu system on the left hand side of the page is often changing, and it's hard to find certain pages at times. Again, on the forum the menu system gets a bit complicated, and it's a bit daunting too - it's easy to get lost within the forum, with so many links active on the page.

Putting its design and usability aspects aside, HBUK is still an excellent site which really encourages its users to earn as much money as possible. Thanks to the refer-a-friend scheme the popularity of the website has been soaring recently, and so the forum is slowly but surely building up with activity. There are plenty of ways to earn money on HBUK for even the simplest of tasks, and I just recommend that you give it a go - what do you have to lose? In my eyes you can only earn from websites such as this one...

How can I get free ringtones? - Part 2

Welcome to the second part of this two part series on ways to get free ringtones for your cell phone. In this section I explain using the internet to find ringtones and what to watch out for.

There is one final way to find free cell phone ringtones if the tactics in the first part of the article are not available to you. Simply use the internet. Just do a search on Google or any other leading search engine for free ringtones. I know you will find many results but there are a few things to be careful about before using this method.

The first thing to make sure about is whether or not the website you are using is legal or not. There are many websites claiming to away free ringtones but they may be doing so illegally so be careful, because you may get in trouble with the law for using such a service. Also, some of these sites will attempt to install Spyware or Adware when you download the ringtones. Thus, I strongly discourage you from using these for that reason but I can't tell you what to do, so it is up to you to decide.

However, there is a second kind of website that you should also be extremely careful about. These websites claim to offer free, bonus or complimentary ringtones and are on the whole legitimate services. However, when you sign-up for the free ringtones you will usually also be signed up for some form of monthly service, billed to your monthly cell phone bill. If you download a lot of ringtones, these services can actually be a good deal. For the rest of you they probably aren't, so be careful.

Some of them will let you cancel before you actually have to pay anything. Thus, you can sometimes download the ringtones and then cancel the service without paying anything. However, not all service will allow you to do this so read the fine print and ask about anything you are not sure of before paying anything.

One final word of caution, many websites offering free ringtones are aimed at children. This has lead to laws do not allow ringtone download sites to use the word free in their advertising. Instead they use terms such "bonus ringtone" or "complimentary ringtone." Let your children know that these websites may not be legitimate and to ask you before downloading anything, and of course keep that in mind for yourself too.

Well I think that about sums up the most common and easiest ways to get free ringtones. As I showed there are many ways to get free ringtones, but each of them may only work for specific kinds of people. Just be sure to do your homework before signing-up for any ringtone offer be it through, a cell phone company, third party promotion or the internet.

Welcome to the first part of this two part article explaining how you can get free ringtones for your cell phone. It is possible, but it requires keeping your eyes open and being a little cautious.

If you are like the average person living in America you have probably bought a new cell phone sometime in the last 18 months. Every year cell phone manufacturers seem to be adding more and more complex features to their phone such as cameras, mp3 players, video players and so much more. However, one of the most popular recent features has actually been the relatively simple ability to customize your ringtone. Everybody wants to be different so what better way to show it than your ringtone.

There is just one major problem ringtones are expensive especially if you like to change it frequently. Depending on your carrier and the ringtone itself, it can cost anywhere from $1 to $3.50 per download. You can do the math as to how much it would cost you per year if you downloaded just one ring tone per week. Let's just say it isn't cheap. The good news though is that there are ways to get free or at least cheaper ringtones, but you have to very careful.

The easiest way to get free ringtones is from your cell phone company when you sign-up. Since the cell phone markets in the United States and around the world are so competitive many operators now include a certain number of free ringtone downloads to convince you to switch or sign-up with them rather than a competing company. Be sure to ask though how many ringtones you get and within what time period they must be used, before you sign-up. You don't want any nasty surprises later on.

Now you may be thinking that's great if I don't have a cell phone, or if I want to switch companies, but what if I am happy with my company, can I still get a free ringtone? The answer is yes you can although it is a little less straightforward.

The most common way to get a free ringtone, if you already have a cell phone, is to look for companies that are offering free ringtones to try their products or services. This can include fast food restaurants, drink companies, retail stores, or any other type of business that may feel it would be to their benefit to give away ringtones to increase their business. Again this only makes sense if you want to try the product or service offered. Again be sure to ask what you are getting into before paying any money.

I think almost everybody likes to get something for nothing, or failing that, get something for a substantial discount. There are many, many ways to get free stuff and I am sure most of you have your own favorite ways but I thought I would include some of my tips on how to get things for free or almost for free.

Tip #1

My favorite place to get free stuff is the grocery store. Most grocery stores these days have tons of free samples that they give away to get you to try new products or switch from existing brands. I am sure you have all seen and tried them at least once. One extra thing to look for at these in-store promotions are coupons you can use to buy the product at a discount. Only of course if you like it.

Tip #2

A great way to get free services is to look for new store openings in your area, especially ones that offer services such as hair cuts, waxing, tanning, etc. These types of businesses will often offer their services free or at a substantially reduced cost to try to get word of mouth about their store going and/or use you as a demonstration of their work. If you live in a big city there are usually dozens of new stores opening every week so keep your eyes open.

Tip #3

Another great way to get free stuff is to look on websites such as craigslist.org or your local classifieds section of the newspaper for the free stuff section. Often you can get things for free from people who no longer want them simply by offering to go pick them up. I find it surprising the kind of things that people are willing to give away simply because they no longer want them. Check your local listings and see what turns up.

Tip #4

A 4th great way to get free stuff is to get free product samples or free trials of products or services. Often companies are more than happy to give a sample of their product for you to try, especially if you are seen as being likely to purchase the product in the future. The benefit to you is that you can try new products virtually risk free. If you are looking for a specific free sample or free trial from a company, I recommend contacting the company directly to see what, if any, free samples they offer. On the other hand if you are looking for companies that offer free sample of their products check out the tip below.

Tip #5

Now, this is my favorite tip although I am a little biased since I run a "free samples" website and newsletter. One of the best ways to find free stuff is simply to search for it on Google or any other search engine. There are hundreds of websites claiming to offer free stuff from free product samples to free registration. One word of warning though, make sure the websites explains what is required to get your free thing. For example, check if there are shipping and handling fees, credit card requirements, trial term length etc. The web is the best place to find free offers, just be careful which websites you use.

Sick of dirty and tarnished jewellery? Great tips on how to clean - and keep it clean!

Sick of wearing tarnished silver jewellery? Don't know where to start or what to do to get your jeweelery clean - and keep it clean? Try the following tips, get your jewellery in ship shape condition! Caring for Silver Jewellery

Pure Silver, a precious and malleable metal, is usually alloyed with copper to enhance its durability and prevent damage to the metal. Typically, sterling silver consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper.

Over time oxidation reactions will occur, especially with sulphur and oxygen, causing silver to become tarnished. Care should be taken to prevent this tarnishing.

To avoid this tarnishing, try to avoid the following:

Applying hair colours or permanent solutions while wearing your jewellery. Showering or swimming with your jewellery on. Body lotions, hair spray, suntan lotions, or oils of any kind on your jewellery. Physical Activities (Sweat). Never removing your jewellery.

How does jewellery get tarnished? Silver does not oxidize in air. However, it does react with sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide in the air or other sulphur compounds and chloride salts, resulting in discolouration called tarnish. Tarnish is a brown discoloration caused by air pollution, cigarette smoke, some foods, furnace fumes, etc. Egg yolks, mustard, table salt, vinegar, olives, salad dressing, perspiration, rubber floor coverings, rubber bands and sulphur in some household synthetic detergents can also tarnish or affect silver. Latex paints may contain rubber and will tarnish silver.

Storage:

How do you keep it from tarnishing and becoming dull again? Provide an environment that will prevent or retard tarnish. Protect silver from sulphur by wrapping it in acid-free tissue and storing it in tarnish resistant cloth or polyethylene bags. Use caution in storing to avoid trapping moisture and do not allow the polyethylene bags to directly contact the silver. If anti-tarnish strips are used, do not allow them to touch the silver and change strips regularly (every 3 to 6 months, depending on where you live and how fast jewellery tends to tarnish) as they can re-deposit the sulphur onto silver.

Some jewellers use ordinary blackboard chalk in place of the no-tarnish strips. Add a single piece of white chalk to the drawer or cabinet where your silver is stored. White chalk is reported to prevent tarnish.

For jewellery you store on display racks or in trays or cases, place the rack and several no-tarnish strips inside a large plastic rubbish bag and close the bag up tightly with a twist-tie. Change the no-tarnish strips every 3 to 6 months. Every time I change my no-tarnish strips I write a quick note on my calendar 3 months from the date I change them, reminding myself it's time to change them again!

Cleaning:

Silver is a soft metal. Use care in cleaning it. No matter how mild an abrasive polish is used, some silver will be removed each time it is polished. Rubbing with a soft cloth causes some wear. Clean with soap (not detergent) and water. If additional cleaning is necessary, use as mild a cleaner as possible. Rinse and polish with soft cloth or felt (tissue is not recommended). Dry the silver jewellery very well before storage to prevent residual water stains.

Use a Silver polishing cloth for general cleaning

Silver polishes, rubbing and buffing removes tarnish but they should be used with care. Avoid polishing silver with any compounds containing abrasive. A paste of very fine precipitated chalk and denatured alcohol can be used.

After using any commercial polish, rinse the silver in water and polish dry with a soft cloth. Residues of some polish left on silver may cause silver to tarnish faster. Soap may dull silver. Detergents with phosphates may leave a stain if not rinsed.

Chemical electrolysis should not be used on silver items, which have oxidized areas as a part of the decoration, or on plated silver. The silver plate may be stripped off. Electrolysis can also affect some finishes and adhesives and may result in a hazy surface on some silver which then requires polishing. Although this method is easy, it may leave the surface dull. Consider the advantages and disadvantages before using this method. In electrolysis, the silver is placed in contact with aluminium and covered with a dilute solution of washing soda and water (1 ounce soda and 2 quarts water). Some experts suggest that only experienced conservators should use this method.

According to some experts, silver-dip, although quick to use, may remove decorative oxidation.

IMPORTANT TIP: Do not use silver dip on rhodium or rhodium-plated jewellery as this will damage the rhodium finish and is known to remove colour and polish from certain gemstones, including turquoise and pearls. Although it may be acceptable to use silver dip on pieces that are not set with gemstones or finished with rhodium, the chemicals are extremely harsh and should be reserved for instances in which the item is completely tarnished, such as antique sterling silver items.

Valuable silver items should be treated with care and carefully stored and cared for. Consult a conservator or a jeweller knowledgeable about silver, silver polishes and processes before attempting to clean valuable items.

Try Ionic jewellery cleaners such as the SpeedBrite, which is considered generally safe for all metals and stones. Ionic jewellery cleaners do not use heat, sound waves, or abrasives, and they do an excellent job of removing tarnish and dirt very quickly. Ionic jewellery cleaners are available through Simply Jewelry and from the Internet; shop carefully because prices can vary widely.

(Note: I've heard that drusy (quartz crystal) stones should not be cleaned in an ionic cleaner because of their delicate crystal structure. I haven't tested that theory, but I don't recommend ionic cleaning of drusy unless you can first test a small piece of it that you don't mind messing up if it gets damaged. Always test small items or areas if unsure! Full instructions and recommendations are included with the unit.

Windex is often used to shine up silver and gold jewellery, including some gemstones (but not the delicate stones listed above; also don't use Windex or any other ammonia solution on oxidized sterling silver, since the ammonia can damage the oxidized finish). Spray Windex on the jewellery, wait a few moments, rinse, and wipe clean with a soft, dry cloth.

But again, I recommend an ionic cleaner to remove tarnish and quickly get sterling silver sparkling like new.

Ultrasonic cleaners, though not as good as Ionic cleaners, are safe to use on most jewellery EXCEPT delicate stones. Small home models of ultrasonic cleaners are available in many stores.

Steam and other hot methods of cleaning are safe for metals and all but the delicate stones listed above. To steam clean jewellery at home, slowly boil a solution of trisodium phosphate (available at hardware stores in white powder form, is a cleaning agent and degreaser, commonly used to prepare household surfaces for painting. It can also be called trisodium orthophosphate) and water in a saucepan. Hang the jewellery in the pan (being very careful not to get burned by the steam!) on a small wire hooked over the edge of the pan. Don't let the jewellery touch any part of the pan.

You can make your own chemical dip by following these instructions: 1. Fill sink full of steaming hot water. 2. Mix 2-tablespoons salt and 2-tablespoons baking soda in bowl. 3. Add mixture to sink of hot water. 4. Cut a small sheet of aluminium foil and push it to the bottom of sink. 5. Dip silver items. Most tarnish will slide off. For stubborn stains, allow them to sit for up to 5-minutes at a time. 6. Rinse well. 7. Dry. 8. Store properly.

Remember! Stainless steel damages silver. Don't use rubber gloves when you wash or polish silver - they emit sulphurs!
